The British Judo Association were seeking funding for the construction of a new building on their existing Dartford site for fitness training of the Team GB and Paralympic GB elite athletes.

The main supporting structure spanning the length of the building and formed as an inverted bow string truss was to symbolise two grappling judo players.

The distinctive red soffit and translucent wall panels related back to the oriental roots of the sport and combined with the colours of the structure represented the colours of the GB flag.
